@gpo
First of all there's no reason to shout, who are you shouting at? Secondly, you're using a 5 year old OS so your experiences may not equal or match those that are using more recent systems. Of Microsoft's Consumer based OS's, of which Windows 2000 isn't really targeted, they've all been pretty unstable in one fashion or another since Windows 95. The latest --Windows XP (Home in particular, Pro less so) is a disaster of an OS so far. Not on par with the crap pile that was WinMe, but close. XP changes the entire driver model, so any drivers you had from either Win2K or 98 no longer work.
I used to be a PC guy through and through, no longer. I work with them every day as the CTO of a Major Internet retailer and I will put my knowledge up against anyone's anyday. I have a CS degree in programming (C, C++, VB, Perl, etc) and I know PCs and PC architecture inside and out.
Yet when I get home there are 2 Macs there. They're just better. OS X.2 has been a dream, and with the BSD core I can recompile and use many of the programs I wrote under Linux or FreeBSD. I can use AppleScript or RealBASIC to put a full Aqua interface on them and I have what is most certainly the best desktop Unix-based OS on the market bar none. I like Linux, a lot, but even it cannot touch OS X in terms of a rock solid core, beautiful UI, and most important of all, 3rd party hardware and software vendor support. You want the best Unix based desktop/laptop system on the market? It's a Mac G4 running OS X.2
As for Windows has all the same programs? Really? Where's Final Cut Pro for Windows? Where's iDVD or DVD Studio Pro for Windows? Where's iTunes for Windows?
Hell even Microsoft's Office suite is better on the Mac -- By Microsoft's own admission! Office v.X is miles ahead of OfficeXP both in terms of functionality and ease of use.
The way I see it is that virtually all PC users were indoctrinated to Personal Computing on a PC/WinTel platform and have become just comfortable enough with it to fear moving to another platform. Most Mac users make a conscious decision to use Macs (an obvious minority) in a Windows-centric world. They make that decision for a reason, and the reason has nothing to do with hatred of MS or Bill Gates. It has to do with wanting the best and easiest to use Personal Computing platform.
In the same vein that Linux users tend to be technically literate code cruncher types that enjoy tooling around with a great Unix based system, Mac users tend to be of the kind that just want a computer to work for them, not against them. They just want to get done whatever it is the computer helps them do and be on with their life. You don't see many Mac users (outside of Japan) modding their Macs with liquid-cooling systems and neon lights. Being a PC chiphead is the same as being a Ford/GM Gearhead in the 1960s/1970s. If you like to crack open your machine and twiddle, if you like to have to remember to update your AV software constantly, and download MS's innumerable Service Packs, patches, and driver fixes, then by all means get a PC, you'll probably really enjoy it.
On the other hand, if you just want your computer to work for you and make your life easier, then get a Mac. Obviously I am not talking about people that make their living in the PC industry by providing services or software, I am simply talking of the end user of said products.
That's my take on the religion of Mac/PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
