I had the same problem. I t stems from not having the Laserwriter driver for a postscript printer chosen. In Mac OS 9 it was EASY to choose that option in the chooser whether or not you actually had a PostScript printer. It isn't so easy in OS X. After calls to Apple Tech Support, who were of no help, I broke down and called Quark. The tech there helped me and all is working fine with generating pdf's from Quark.
Go to the print center and choose ADD new printer.
Choose IP PRINTING - even if you don't have a PostScript printer.
Enter the IP Address of 10.0.0.5 (this is the same one the Quark guy had.)
Leave GENERIC chosen as the printer description.
Choose OKAY or DONE and then make this the default printer.
Find your Quark express folder and delete the folder named "Jaws".
Restart Quark Xpress.
This worked for me and the pdf's aren't much larger than those generated by Acrobat under my old OS 9 configuration. Now if only Quark would [..] make a dual type license for small business so I can use Quark 6 on my laptop as well as my desktop under the same Activation Code without having to buy a second copy of Quark.
