Dear Adobe team
The InDesign user group of the "Hilf Dir Selbst Forum" Switzerland has taken the trouble to collect interesting and possible features for the forthcoming versions of ID. Below you'll find a loose assemblage of our desired features listed in no particular order.
Alias Object Technology (e.g.
http://www.vivapress.de)
To be able to derive from a "source object" as many as desired clone objects which change all collectively if the source object was modified. These objects are relocate- and placeable (e.g. for the production out of a buisness card with marks on a A4-Document)
Picture And Graphic Stylesheets
e.g. duplex dyeing of b/w Tiffs', selection of frame kind, strength, fill colour etc. .
Coloured Stylesheet Display
The different Stylesheets can be visualized colourized for controlling purpose in the text likewise the hidden characters
Montage Function
An implemented and extensive montage function, similar to Pagemaker
Mark Generator
To be able to provide objects in a document individually with marks
Linked Flow In
(new column, new pages until the end of the text) also from the pasteboard.
A straight text editor like in Pagemaker
MS-Publisher import function
A XML field linkage, where the order of the In Design document is leading.
If:
Order in the XML file: X1, X2
Order in InDesign: X2, X1
... then X1 will not be displayed, because that field more or less already passed by in the XML, at which InDesign X2 is pasted.
Mathematical scientific formula Editor
The possibility to enter mathematical formulas and special characters and display them graphically (fractions, roots, integrals and so on)... for example similar to the formula editor in ms office... so it isn't necessary at all to use the loop way via exporting the formula out of the ms formula editor into a pdf and place it afterwards into InDesign
Object Groups
To be able to group formats, layers and colours and to fade in and out in groups (ref. layer drawers in Photoshop)
Quotation marks should be able to defined (alternatively) on the paragraph level
Different Display Modes.
e.g. a text mode, in the case of long texts all the text frames and columns should be arranged successively so you are able to scroll en bloc. So you don't have to jump between the right and left pages.
Not in the way it is solved in pagemaker, but in full resolution with the actual paragraph width and with all the typographic possibilities.
In other productions I would love to have the possibility offered in PageMaker, to turn over the pages - with a common montage area. As switch able display mode would be very pleasant too.
Different sized page formats in one document
Intelligent ligature set (probably by means of the dictionary)
The spell check resp. the enlisting of new words is still extremely circular (Pagemaker was much more agreeable)
Please don't use tildes for the hyphenation, because they are way too exhausting to be used with German keyboards.
A dictionary editor
Accompanied marginalia
First Line RIGHT Indent.
To be able to select various text passages which aren't connected to each other (like in Word)
To accent paragraphs by a perpendicular line (flanking the paragraph on the right or left side) so you don't have to create a table for the same effect
Manual adoption of formats on existing stylesheets
A definable title set over 2 up to X columns (without any additional frames)
The automatic repetition of Table heads in multilateral tables on the top of each new page
The dynamic and automatic adjustment of the symbol bars and palettes to the used tool, already practised e.g. in Word, CorelDraw or Photoshop starting from version 6 etc. . That would be also a way to get a grip on the whole palette flood.
Left Over Display
To show the amount of characters the actual left over consists of
Text Frame Option -> Offsetdistance
If you are inserting values via the tab-key the order should be modified in the following way: down, left, right, above
Shortcuts -> Character and Paragraph Styles
You should be able to define shortcuts also again onto the ALT-key. It's no longer possible since ID2.
In the Mac version of InDesign 2 the cuts of some fonts aren't recognized anymore (SERIALS-Fonts). The cuts are listed in the font selection menu which is leading to a quite long list and results into an error message if you are exchanging documents with a PC (fonts are missing)
The possibility of being able to move selected text fragments via drag and drop through the document (by pressing an additional key)
The possibility to sort paragraphs numerically and/or alphabetically.
A function, which numbers paragraphs automatically, sets them back to one again or labels them with an arbitrary special labelling character.
Eye-catching points particularly in the form that you are able to assign automatically in the beginning in a paragraph format a chose able number of symbols or words to a different character format (or maybe also at the end of the paragraph)
You should be able to direct a paragraph that it categorical e.g. starts with one or more labelling character in an arbitrary character format (e.g. "#" + "Tab"). Or that it automatically starts with a number, likewise followed up by a tab.
Numbers as initial characters should be counted up by the value of X (usually 1) in the next paragraph of same type. Additionally there should be a command, which sets back a selected row to the value of "1" (it's possible in FrameMaker).
To be able to select for each colour the desired screen angle right after creation. Furthermore it would be great to be able to modify the screen angle of each colour in the case of composite output (ref. print menu). So far it is only possible in the separated output mode.
In the case of the PDF-direct export from In Design, it would be nice, to be able to determine the down sampling threshold. So far the threshold level is set to 1,5. A possibility to adjust it manually would be reasonable.
In the case of a master page with unequal margin conditions and if you add or remove a page in a make-up with X pages it would be nice if the included objects would adjust themselves to the new state. Up to now you have to readjust all the objects manually or apply a script. QuarkXPress offers that already for quite a long time
It can be a real obstacle, that you aren't able to produce multi-ink colours in In Design. Which means the possibility to deposit an arbitrary special colour with a certain amount of process colour (e.g. Pantone Blue72 with 50 % deposits of black)
