groupSequentiellNum.jsx is indeed shorter than the script that Matthias uses (good sleuthing, by the way: it was indeed mine :)). The older script, though, also deals with index entries whose pages had been ranged earlier. So if you have something like "Cats 3-7, 12-20" and add some page numbers or combine two entries so that you end up with, say, "Cats 3-7, 12-20, 8-10, 17-25", the script rearranges that as "Cats 3-10, 12-25".
By some coincidence, I rewrote my script last week and it now handles roman page numbers as well, both for ranging and re-ranging. I'll post it when it's ready. The f/ff addition is an interesting one, I hadn't thought of that.
